Scott Hogsett

Sport: Quadriplegic (“Quad”) Rugby
Residence: Maricopa, Arizona

Born and raised in Spokane, WA, Scott Hogsett was an athlete from a very young age, playing various sports including baseball, racquetball and golf.

At the age of 19, he was involved in an accident and broke his neck. Scott is a C-5/C-6 quadriplegic. After the accident, Scott wanted to further his education and moved to Phoenix, AZ where he attended Arizona State University, majoring in recreational therapy.

In the summer of 2005, movie-goers across the U.S. came to know Scott as one of the hard-charging members of the U.S. Quadriplegic Rugby Team who were profiled in the critically-acclaimed documentary "MURDERBALL," which chronicled the team’s quest for the gold medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. The U.S. team took the bronze. In 2006, Team USA won the gold medal at the World Wheelchair Rugby Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand. Also, in 2006 Team USA took the gold at the North American Cup in Birmingham, AL. Scott is focused now on training for the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.

Scott has been playing wheelchair rugby for 11 years. He focuses much of his time playing wheelchair rugby for Team USA and the Phoenix Heat. Off the court, he works as a peer-mentor, visiting various Phoenix hospitals. Scott not only plays for the Phoenix Heat, he also coaches the team and in 2006 the Heat finished their season with a 36-1 record.

Scott also works with The Hartford, founding sponsor of U.S. Paralympics®, using his experience and success to help positively change public attitudes and perceptions about disability.
