The Hartford's Commitment

The Hartford not only sponsors U.S. Paralympics (USP), a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, we also helped to found it, spurred by our Ability Philosophy. It's a belief that people are creative and resourceful enough to overcome their challenges. And that their abilities, not their disabilities, determine who they truly are. Supporting Paralympics has allowed us to promote this positive philosophy in a way that's globally meaningful, visible and inspiring. Here's what that has meant to our company, customers and U.S. Paralympics athletes.

Unique honor. The Hartford's Group Benefits Division is the only one of its kind to support world-class U.S. Paralympics athletes. For more than 15 years, we've been raising funds in their behalf and cheering them on. It's humbling, not just because of the great athleticism we witness, but also because of the character we encounter.

Vibrant business message. Our U.S. Paralympics sponsorship distinguishes us in the marketplace. It makes our Ability Philosophy tangible and credible. And it clearly demonstrates commitment to helping individuals lead active, productive lives after a disabling event. Our business associates understand it. And our customers are inspired by it.

Tireless support. As sponsors, we've taken many initiatives to help the U.S. Paralympics team purchase equipment, upgrade training facilities and subsidize travel and other costs of competitive sports. A shining example is the role we played in bringing 20 U.S. Paralympians to compete in the 2008 Paralympics Games in Beijing, China in 2008. Athletes in track and field, alpine skiing, swimming, wheelchair road racing and cycling were among the contenders. Team U.S.A. won 99 medals and finished third in the overall medal count.

Enthusiastic following. Since 2007, hundreds of producers and employers from all around the country have participated in events we've sponsored to raise awareness about U.S. Paralympians. (Nearly 200 events in the last two years alone.) They range from immersion events to mini-Paralympics experiences that promote training and team-building. Athletes have also taken the podium as motivational speakers at producer gatherings, on behalf of our sales offices.
